The sand if very fine. It could be that he's not actually blasting when she took this photo, or that you just can not see it.

As far as the people on the street, because it is so fine, falling to the ground with air currents and such would probably disburse the sand enough that it would not be an issue.

That makes sense and I am glad the man is protected. But what about all the poor slobs walking on the sidewalk onto whom the dirt is falling?

we're going to have to have a big party on the blue line division street platform. Just a couple weeks ago I met a rachelleb.com/chicagoist.com reader there. He emailled me the first time he saw me there then the second time he introduced himself. If you see me again, Becky, say "hi"! :)

Yeah, Mark, I definitely was afraid that by saying hi at the El I'd look like a blogstalker. So what did I decide to do instead? Post a comment, of course...written blogstalking! Ah well. That was a nice compliment you gave your friend Rachelle; maybe next time I run into her I'll actually introduce myself.

Blogstalker!

Becky,
Speaking as one of Rachelle's close friends, I can say that if you had introduced yourself to Rachelle, you would have been warmly received. She's one of the friendlier, more polite people you'll meet.

He's probably sandblasting, which is an abrasive cleaning method that quickly removes dirt, stains, or deteriorating paint. Sandblasting is one of the best known and most frequetly used building cleaning methods. He's wearing that suit to protect himself from the fine sand.

Hi Rachelle-not related to your post: I think I stood right next to you on the train this morning. I've been reading/enjoying your site for a while, and have emailed you or commented a couple times (Orange recipes, East Village delineation nitpicking ) so I kind of did a double take when you walked up at the Division stop. I'm not exactly "with it" in the morning, though, and didn't introduce myself; also, I wasn't sure what your tolerance for strangers saying "hi! I know you! You have no idea who I am!" is at 8:30 am. I was the one in the black trousers, purple shirt, and jean jacket with too much stuff-headphones, bag, purse, book in hand. Anyway, just thought I'd say hi. Nice to see you around the neighborhood.
