Division Street is the northern border of East Ukrainian Village. It’s become a very trendy area to eat at nice restaurants and shop in specialty boutiques. There is one Mexican grocery left but it’s closed. The Eastern European roots come through in Andy’s Deli. This photo is of the old storefront. There is a new one just up the block. It’s still very authentic and not uncommon to walk by and see some beautiful blond women speaking Polish.
In these last 4 posts I have walked the perimeter of East Ukrainian Village. I’m looking forward to exploring the interior of the neighborhood next. A lot of people are moving into Ukrainian Village & East Ukranian Village because the real estate is cheap right now. I felt the need to take these photos because I think if I go back in a few years and did this again it would look very different. We’ll see!

Just stumbled upon your website. I grew up in the western part of the Ukrainian Village. Any plans to hit that anytime soon? Some pics of St Mary’s Hospital, Leavitt Street Bible Church (now New Hope), and the Russian Orthodox church next to it would bring back memories . . .

Ah, the old neighborhood - it lives! And you sure are *directly* next door to my old apartment in that second to last shot.

Thanks, I love seeing images of the E. Village, where I was born, here on the internet.

I lived at Paulina and Haddon in 1993-5. I went back a couple years ago and BOY has it changed. There was a starbucks on the corner where my laundromat was. I liked the rough and tumble nature of the place and the bar that never closed. But c’est la vie. at least the gold star is still there. Division is wide enough to always feel a little empty.
