Chicago Avenue is the southern boundary of East Ukrainian Village. The man in the 5th photo asked me to take his picture. I’m not sure why. Chicago Avenue at Ashland Avenue is very Hispanic and old school. There are a lot of Elotes carts and most everything is in Spanish. With the coffee shop and the pharmacy you can see a little bit of the neighborhood’s Eastern European roots coming through. As you walk west towards Damen you start to see gentrification creeping in. At Chicago and Wolcott there are even brand new condos being built.

Re: The Picture of the “Pharmacy”…..My Grandfather Meyer and My Uncle Leo are the two men who originally opened, owned, and ran Deitch Pharmacy.
As a child, I often ran around the neighborhood, playing at the school park (behind the store) and visited my Great-grandmother who lived above the pharmacy in one of its many apartments.
This pictures brings back many wonderful memories of my Grandparents, Uncle and the many wonderful individuals who I met just being there.
Thank you….
The picture of Deitch Pharmacy, I love it! Thank you! This pharmacy was started before 1965, by my Grandfather Meyer Deitch, and his brother Leo Deitch. I have hundreds of wonderful memories of the neighborhood, and my Great-grandmother who lived upstairs above the Pharmacy. Thank you….this means alot!
Jodie, I am responding to your comments about Deitch Pharmacy – it was opened way before 1965 because I availed myself of it in the 50′s. Leo Deitch was apparently your great uncle and David (his son) obviously a distant cousin. Are you in contact with David or perhaps one of his children? David & I were friends long ago and it would be nice to chat with him about his life and mine. I left Chicago in 1956 when I married and now reside in Virginia. I don’t have much contact with my old Chicago friends and while visiting Chicago several weeks back I could not believe the pharmacy was still there, so while browsing the net and seeing the picture and reading your comments I thought I would take a chance and see if you know how I could possibly contact David (if he is still living) or his wife and children. I hope this email reaches you and you respond. Thank you for sharing your memories of the old neighborhood, I too, have many.
Rita:
I am sorry, I do not have contact with David or his family. My Uncle Leo and his wife Agnes moved to Scottsdale many years ago, and unfortunately, My Uncle Leo and Aunt Agnes passed several years back from a heart condition. You may contact me by email or by phone (westernstargal@yahoo.com or in my office at 877-479-3174) I would be more than happy to give you some of my other relatives names and numbers so that you may contact them, and try to find David.
Hi Rita & Jodie,
I was for some reason struck with the impulse to look up the pharmacy and found these posts. David is my father. Leo was my Grandfather and Jodie is correct, he and Agnes have since passed on. Feel free to contact me if you like, there must be a reason for this funny way to connect old family and friends…
Avram: How neat! I am Meyer and Ruths eldest grandchild. My mother is Joan Elaine Deitch-Seminary. (Ruth & Meyers daughter) Were you at Aunt Sally’s 100th birthday party???? (Sally Lerner – Ruth’s baby sister) Please if you find a way….contact me. I have some pictures you may find interesting…..westernstargal@yahoo.com or my office is 877-479-3174.
Here is to connecting with family!!!!
