That used to be “my station” when I lived in Chicago (in the late 80’s). We (my roommates and I) lived at 916 W. Roscoe, a mere 20 paces from the El Jardin Cafe, where we were regulars. We’d commute on the el every day to work and that was our stop!

Thanks for bringing back some good memories!

This is going to sound really ignorant, as I’ve never been to Chicago before, but are those the same type of subway cars as some of ours in NYC? They look identical from the outside.

on the outside this train looks the most similar to nyc’s. there are other, older (i think) trains, that run regularly where the doors open in instead of sliding like new york’s. the insides of the trains are different. more like the old F train, i think. but the seats are like rows of seats with an aisle instead of running only along the sides. hard to describe. oh, here is a not very good photo. we have the chicago card plus, which is awesome. but we don’t have monthly unlimited passes which stinks.

thanks for the great pics of belmont el station.
they have special meaning for me.
i once lived on the 2nd floor apartment next to the station. we lived there in 1958 thru 1960. we went to the robert morris grade school and also st. sebastians next to ill masonic hosp. the pic you have shows our apt . it has since been torn down. so have both schools. our address was 936 fletcher st. i now live in calif. and was able to take my three kids 5 grand kids and my wife . to a cubs game via the el and show them the house next to the el. thank you jim

They are much smaller (48’ long) than NYC’s cars (70’ long), in order to make it around many of the tight radius curves on Chicago’s L system. I believe the PATH cars in NY are closer in size. Chicago’s L cars are much narrower than NYC’s so they bow outward to gain extra width yet fit within the skinnier dimensions of Chicago’s system. Most NY cars are flat-sided.

The next series of L cars to be delivered in 2008 -09 are to have the “bowling alley” configuration like New York’s, so there will be more room for standees.

From 1919 to 1963, one could catch a North Shore Line train to Milwaukee, WI at the Belmont stop.

The older cars with the blinker doors (that open in) are to be replaced by the bowling alley cars. They date from 1969 - 1970 and had padded seats when they were new.
