Division Street is the northern border of East Ukrainian Village. It’s become a very trendy area to eat at nice restaurants and shop in specialty boutiques. There is one Mexican grocery left but it’s closed. The Eastern European roots come through in Andy’s Deli. This photo is of the old storefront. There is a new one just up the block. It’s still very authentic and not uncommon to walk by and see some beautiful blond women speaking Polish.
In these last 4 posts I have walked the perimeter of East Ukrainian Village. I’m looking forward to exploring the interior of the neighborhood next. A lot of people are moving into Ukrainian Village & East Ukranian Village because the real estate is cheap right now. I felt the need to take these photos because I think if I go back in a few years and did this again it would look very different. We’ll see!

Damen Avenue is the Western boundary of East Ukrainian Village. This area is less Hispanic and slightly more influenced by the hipsters & yuppies who have moved into the area in the last few years. It has many graystone buildings that are over 100 years old. The East Village’s Eastern European roots show through in the sign above the bar. “Zimne piwo” is Polish for “cold beer.”

Chicago Avenue is the southern boundary of East Ukrainian Village. The man in the 5th photo asked me to take his picture. I’m not sure why. Chicago Avenue at Ashland Avenue is very Hispanic and old school. There are a lot of Elotes carts and most everything is in Spanish. With the coffee shop and the pharmacy you can see a little bit of the neighborhood’s Eastern European roots coming through. As you walk west towards Damen you start to see gentrification creeping in. At Chicago and Wolcott there are even brand new condos being built.

East Ukranian Village, also known as East Village, is bound by Ashland Avenue to the east, Chicago Avenue to the south, Damen Avenue to the west and Division Street to the north. I walked this boundry clockwise starting with Ashland. These are the photos I took on the first leg of the walk. They show that this part of the East Village is mostly Hispanic with a sprinkling of Eastern European thrown in and just a tiny bit of American shops starting to make an appearance.
