Hawaiian Bruises

For much of the trip I was the butt of many jokes because every single day I managed to injure myself. Even when I didn’t leave the condo. On the first or second day in Kaua’i I slipped and fell in the shower, making a huge noise and leaving a long bruise on my inner right thigh. I also stepped in some streams, injured my knee when I fell in a river, cut my leg up at Queens Bath, scraped my legs on a hike, fell off a deck (the same deck twice!), and got some “blisters” on my feet. Now, I would never ever claim to be the most graceful person on earth, but this was getting ridiculous. By the end of the trip there was barely a spot on my legs that wasn’t bruised or scratched or swollen.

On my last day in Kaua’i I tried to make a plea with Cousin so he would feel sorry for me. I proposed that to guarantee that I have just one injury-free day, that he should bring me drinks by the pool and lather my skin with sunscreen while I just floated on the raft all day. Kind of like a really good cabana boy. He wasn’t going for it for even one second. I tried to plea the same deal with Dallas, but mistakenly I did it when Cousin was still in the room and before Dallas could consider and respond Cousin told him I just tried the same thing on him. So no dice. Neither was in. Still, somehow I managed to not kill myself on the last day. And when we were going to dinner I just remember Kristin whispering in my ear “don’t fall, don’t fall, don’t fall… “

Saturday at noon, Kristin, Cousin, Dallas & I flew out of Lihue, Kaua’i to Honolulu on Oahu. We had lunch at Duke’s Waikiki and then had to drop Dallas off at the airport for his flight to Boston. Kristin, Cousin & I shopped around a bit and then had a couple beers on a skydeck and watched the sun set. We then went back to the airport to catch our 9pm redeye back to Chicago. Rob & Sarah left from Kaua’i to Boston & Washington D.C.

Roy’s

May 15th, 2004 · No Comments

Friday night, for our last dinner in Kaua’i, we got dressed up and went out to master chef Roy Yamaguchi’s Hawaiian fusion restaurant, Roy’s. Dallas knew a chef in the back and hooked us up. Everyone got seafood and it was amazing. I had seared scallops and chocolate souffle. I can’t even describe how good the food was! Perfect for our last night out. Afterwards we tried to take some photos of us using the timer and it wasn’t working out so great. The outtakes are pretty funny, though. We finally ended up asking someone to take a group photo of us.

I’d be willing to bet that 90% of our time spent at the condo was spent down by the pool. On Friday most of us did nothing but lay around and drink some sort of fruit juice/lemonade/vodka concoction or beer. It was a day of relaxation. Rob & I watched the sun set before getting ready for our last dinner on Kaua’i.

Dinner

Dallas’ Uncle Dee and Aunt Kathy live in Waimea and had us over on Thursday night for dinner, along with other friends and family. Uncle D and Aunt Kathy live in the house that Dallas grew up in and his grandmother lives in another house on the property. The food that everyone brought and made was amazing. The pupu (appetizer) table had wontons with hot mustard sauce, sushi, stuffed lychee (with cream cheese and macadamia nuts), chicken wings, an artichoke/toast/mayo/parmesan appetizer that Kristin and I helped make, and my new favorite, seared ahi. Dallas had talked all week about this Portuguese meat that his aunt makes. It was so delicious. Kind of like post roast with the vegetables, but with more of a vinegar sauce. We also had grilled chicken breasts, fillet mignon, macaroni salad, a green salad with papaya seed dressing, and a fruit salad. If that wasn’t enough there were also several desserts. One of Dallas’ aunts found out I am a chocolate fiend and hooked me up with some triple chocolate cheese cake AND brownies. No wonder I gained weight this vacation! Everything was so great. Mahalo to Dallas’ family and friends for having us all over.
