Shaun is in town from Boston and last night we went out for dinner at Twin Anchors and then saw the show Doors Open on the Right at The Second City.

Founded in 1932, Twin Anchors is one of the oldest restaurants in Chicago. It was Opened by the Walters family, who were affiliated with the Chicago Yacht Club and who gave the restaurant it’s nautical theme. Twin Anchors was a favorite of Old Blue Eyes himself, Frank Sinatra, and has always been known for it’s tender, barbequed baby-back ribs. I don’t eat ribs .. like.. ever.. .but I will say these are some of the best ribs I’ve ever had. So delicious.. and go for the zesty sauce, not the mild. Shaun and I both ordered mild because we thought that the zesty would be hot. The waitress brought out both sauces for us to try and zesty was definately better. It wasn’t hot at all, just more tangy than the mild.

Second City is an institution in Chicago. This is the theater that launched the careers of John Belushi, Chris Farley, Mike Myers, Bill Murray, Gilda Radner, John Candy, Dan Aykroyd, George Wendt, Tina Fey, and Amy Sedaris, along with many others. The show was 3 acts, the last one being completely improvised. So funny. I kept wondering which of the performers we would be seeing next on Saturday Night Live.

Overall, a great night. It was nice to see Shaun again. Oh, and this is about my one month anniversary here.. so a good way to spend it.

Very hot - there is so much great comedy in Chicago. Also plays and musicals, since many go to Chicago before coming to Broadway.

i can’t complain too much since i do it all the time, but seeing pictures of food when hungry is painful. sounds like a great night though.

i went to second city in detroit once and there was an audience participation bit. it was pretty funny.

Bob Odenkirk is a favorite of mine. He and Jill Talley (1990 alums) were in Mr. Show along with David Cross. Bob did some writing for SNL and then moved to The Ben Stiller Show where he met up with David. Sorry, I’m a big Mr. Show nerd. Jill met and married her husband, Tom Kenny, while on Mr. Show. Tom is the voice of Spongebob. And Spongebob is the gardener for Kevin Bacon! Wow! It really does work!

Rachelle forgot to mention the older gentlemen that were checking her out at twin anchors, one was loaded too, it was hilarious. I’m about to head out into the city again to go to the other famous SNL place, Billy Goat Tavern… CHEESEBURGER CHEESEBURGER!

oh yeh. i forgot about those guys. they were seated at the table next to us and the drunk one sitting on shaun’s side facing me got caught saying his view was better to the one sitting on my side facing shaun. the one on my side, when caught, uttered “how about those cowboys!?” which lead me to believe that they were visiting from texas.

Save money in Chicago : God Bless Taxes…
Fountain soda drink tax: This one hails from Chicago. If you buy a “fountain soda drink” – think Pepsi in a cup or glass – you’ll pay a 9 percent tax. If you bought the same soda in a bottle or a can you’ll only pay 3 percent.
