Spring Has Sprung

Buds

Buds
Mystery Buds, Wicker Park, Chicago

This weekend I was poking around the front yard* and saw a wooden board in the flower bed. When I lifted it up there were these buds growing out of the ground. Does anyone know what they are? Tulips? They have to be a bulb, right?

*By front yard I mean the 6′ x 15′ patch of grass in front of my house. It’s fun to call it the front yard even though it barely qualifies. When my landlord first showed me the apartment he apologized that it wasn’t much and I said “Hey, it’s 100% more grass than my apartment in New York has!”

There’s almost nothing as thrilling as the first signs of spring!

wow, that’s really strange! I was just about to post about the first buddings of spring I saw, and they looked just like the mystery buds in your pics!

These are “meiklokjes”. I ‘m sorry, but I only know the name in Dutch. But one thing is sure: NO TULIPS!

I just found out the Latin name is Convallaria Majalis.

And, yes, Ijust discovered the English name: It ’s the European lily of the valley.
It ’s nice to have them in your garden. They really smell nice. The flowers will start to grow at the end of april, beginning of may.

Lily of the Valley DO smell good. I like tulips too. I guess we’ll see what these turn into!

I tihnk they are tulips as well. Hopefully you won’t get rabbits like I have, who chew them off before they even bloom.

How much grass did you have in NY? I’m guessing none… so technically you have infinity% more grass than you had in NY.

Sorry, as an engineer I can offer little to no help in identifying flowers, but exhorbinant help in mathematical functions.

i think your mom is right with the first picture and the other photo looks like lily of the valley leaves. i hope they bloom whatever they are…my tulip bulbs do great the first year after planting but it seems that they are more like annuals and are not as plentiful the following years. enjoy.
