Nancy and Josh came down today from Milwaukee to go shopping on Michigan Avenue and to help me with some things around the house. We went shopping first and then came back and Josh assembled my dining room table and chairs while Nancy and I cooked dinner – seared scallops with lemon and dill. We also had rolls, a garden salad, and shoepeg corn. Dessert was apple pie a la mode. Josh also helped me hang a full-length mirror and some miscellaneous hooks around the house. Josh is my rent-a-husband.

I am so excited to have a dining room table now.. Also, two days ago I bought a set of silverware because I knew Nancy and Josh would be over for dinner. In New York I survived for 2 1/2 years with only one knife, one fork and one spoon and that is all that I had before I bought the new set. I feel so grown up. Now I just need to get some dishes and glasses. Tonight we had to eat our delicious meal off paper plates and disposable bowls! I’m getting there little by little. It can be annoying to have to get everything from scratch, but it’s fun because this is the first time in my life that I’ve been able to go to the store and pick out everything, exactly what I want, and not be hanging on to hand-me-downs that I have just because they were free but that I don’t really like.

  1. One knife? One spoon? And one fork? HOW?! I mean… for as many times as you’d have to wash them, it would have been so much more efficient to buy at least one more set… 😉 I’ll be in a similar position in a month or two though after I start work. Can’t wait.

  2. girl – i hope you get a nice repertoire of dishes going! i’m so glad you have a real kitchen and a beautiful dining room table. and such nice friends to help you shop for and assemble said beautiful table! 🙂

  3. dick – your card table is waiting for you by the front door. 🙂 you might want to keep it there for the girls though ha ha… did you notice her “white” chairs? ha

  4. mmm, scallops! and new stuff – yay! I love crate & barrel… 🙂 and you’re totally making me regret not getting this super cute vintage apron that I saw in Austin – darnit!!! If you ever come to SF, be sure to hit Emmy’s Spaghetti Shack, where they have several cutie vintage aprons hanging on a clothes line across the restaurant. And the best spaghetti & meatballs, too!! 🙂

  5. I’ve had a good track record with other recipes you’ve posted, so I decided to try this for a dinner last night. The scallops… SO AWESOME.
