Casino, Atlantic City, New Jersey

Boardwalk, Atlantic City, New Jersey
With nothing better to do on our President’s Day off, Mark and I hopped in the car and drove down to Atlantic City and found it to be so much like Coney Island with Las Vegas casinos. I had a lot of fun but found it to be a little sad knowing that this was one of our last adventures together for quite a while.. Mark has a new baby on the way and I’ll be moving off to Chicago.

Atlantic City is a DUMP. The casinos are bland, the surrounding neighborhoods appear as if they’re awaiting condemnation and I was half expecting hypodermic needles to wash up on the beach. All of the “Disney-ification” of Las Vegas certainly hasn’t made it to the east coast.
AC’s un-photogenic nature may have been a blessing in surprise. Our lack of stimulation kept us talking the entire trip…about Chicago, San Diego, New York, New Jersey, babies, friends old and new, blogs, kitsch, families, co-workers…everything, really.
I will certainly miss chatting face-to-face with Rachelle after she heads off to tackle new challenges in Chi-town. She’s even more interesting in person.

Yep. Atlantic City is what it is but even more so in the cold of winter. Old, dark, dirty and unapologetic about all of that and more. It says, “Sink or swim.” Vegas is more like, “Sink, swim or go and wade around in the kiddie pool if you want.”

“Atlantic City” is one of my favorite Springsteen songs.

Wow, I just moved from New York to southern Jersey, and you actually made it seem like a worthwhile place to visit!

I’ll miss your NYC life. I guess I’ll get to know more of Chicago and your new friends there. I’ll skip Atlantic City and just head for Coney Island.
