My new office is located on the 31st floor of a building on Michigan Avenue in a part of Chicago that is referred to as either 1) downtown, 2) The Loop, or 3) The Magnificent Mile, depending on who you are talking to. Our building, instead of having outside walls, has floor to ceiling windows all around. The view is magnificent.

Beautiful photos! I’ll be visiting in just under 3 weeks and your photos are getting me even more excited. Thanks!

Hi. Came across your site via Gothamist. Those are familar views, my office building used to be at 900 N. Michigan. Welcome to Chicago!
jenny // Feb 10, 2004 at 12:57 pm

oooh, ooh, one request. okay, first request. on st. patrick’s day, can you take a picture of the river after they dye it?
joel // Feb 10, 2004 at 1:50 pm
these photos are amazing. I like where I work (other than the goddamn 40 minute drive each way) but I miss working downtown so much
. This suburban stuff is for the birds.

is that the wrigley building or the tribune building? The fancy lit-up building at twilight. Chicago has such great architecture. what do native Chicagoans call the downtown area?
Nan // Feb 10, 2004 at 2:52 pm
i can’t wait to come visit you there – especially in the summer. all the shopping on michigan ave! and going to navy pier…

Welcome to Chicago, Ms. Bowden.
Concerning the location of your new office, the Loop, technically is the path that the Brown, Orange, Green and Purple CTA lines trace around the downtown. The path is Lake(N), Wells(W), Van Buren(S) & Wabash(E). The Loop community area, however, is bounded by the Chicago River(N&W), Lake Michigan(E) & Roosevelt(S). And the Mag. Mile is Michigan Av. from the Chicago River north to Oak St.
In the second picture from your office (looking south), I can see one shoulder of the Wrigley Bldg. and then Michigan Av. & the Chicago R. down below, so you are definitely on the Mag. Mile, arguably downtown, but not in the Loop.
Again, welcome, and be sure to brush up on your trivia.

Have you leaned against the window like Ferris?
(all my chicago knowledge comes from watching Ferris Bueller’s Day Off)

DId someone just complain about a 40 minute drive… I’d love a 40 minute drive. 90 minute drives suck.
Looks like Chicago may have some interesting photo opps too! Allright!
ken // Feb 10, 2004 at 4:06 pm
I’m not sure, but from your pictures, your office might be in the building where Bob Hartley’s (The Bob Newhart Show) office was located.
joel // Feb 10, 2004 at 4:15 pm
yeah, 40 minutes. 40. 90. what’s the difference? it all sucks!
Rachelle’s going to have herself a siiiick view.

I have been in meetings almost the entire time i have spent this past week in the office and i’m still finding it extremely difficult to concentrate. they need to move the conference rooms from the outside of the building to the inside.. i find myself staring out the window at the view and spacing completely out at what anyone is saying. i am looking forward to discovering and researching more of the chicago downtown area and skyline.

The Trib building across the street from you is interesting. Pay attention to the walls outside. You’ll find little surprises embedded in there. Which is your favorite?
Mike // Feb 10, 2004 at 11:36 pm
Gorgeous. I love that part of Chicago. Actually, I love all of Chicago, but I’m only ever there when it’s cold (visiting family at Christmas), so I don’t get the full experience.

Here Here Joel! It all sucks! Except Rachelles amazing view.
hubs // Feb 11, 2004 at 3:09 pm

i think if i tried to look down from a great great height and take a picture (such as the first), i would feel unbalanced, and my heart would flutter just that little bit. i am a little afraid of heights – just a little.
rachelleb // Feb 11, 2004 at 10:29 pm
i’m not really afraid of heights, but i must admit that i get a little dizzy while standing close to the edge.

Beautiful pictures. I used to have an office in the John Hancock building. Always a beautiful view. Spoke to the Fire Chief one time after a fire in the SW corner of the building. He said, at that time, “We’re not sure we can fight a fire above the 32 floor.” Seems as though Chicago (beautiful city) has a water pressure problem. A little scary. If I recall, the booster pumps are located on the 32 floor. My former office was on 5th Ave. NYC. Love both cities.
