This week Chicago and I are bonding. I flew in yesterday and I’m out here for a few days on business and then am looking for apartments this weekend. Actually, a few more days of business than I expected (or packed for).. I wont be coming back until some time next week now. I will try to post some pictures as soon as I can figure out how to do it here. My new laptop doesn’t have any photo editing software on it (gasp!). I am on complete information overload with trying to take in the city, meeting so many new people (both at work and friends) and learning a new job and taking on new projects. So last night Kristin and I went to this chill bar called Guthrie’s. They have cheap beer and tons of board games and people sit around and drink and play Connect Four and Monopoly. We just had had a couple of beers and ordered in some food from Costello’s. Really low key. … and honestly, we had our coats and scarves on at 10 and were about to walk out the door. Uh.. but. . . we ended up staying and I didn’t get back to my hotel until 1:40 a.m. The smell of smoke on my jacket this morning was enough to make me want to puke. Ahhh.. welcome to smoky Chicago.

    Rachelle! Go to Hot Doug’s!!

  • Nan

glad to have you so close. let me know if there are any days you want to get together – otherwise, i’m patiently waiting until you officially move.

  • Doug

Another “rachelle” blog and a “Hot Doug’s”? Such intriguing parallels between the two cities.

How soon can we expect a winner-take-all Chicago Blog-Off between Rachelle and Mimi Smartypants? If it were a pay-per-view event, I’d plunk for it.

Anyone remember “bizarro superman” from superfriends? That was Superman’s twin but he was on the other side. Sounds like we now have Rachelle and “Bizarro Rachelle” who could possibly be on the other side, depending on her football allegiance…

Try a bar called “Governors.” It’s old school, but it’s a cool joint. I would also recommend taking in an old jaz club while you are there, next to New Orleans, Chicago is a great place for jaz…

  • Ed

for the record, I had to spell “jaz” with one z because the web form told me that 2 z’s was “questionable content.” wtf, mate? :/

Rachelle??? are you moving to Chicago for good? (I hope not. I love your blog – best on the web, and all about NYC too. I guess I’ll learn about Chicago if you do move.) Funny – I had drinks with a guy who consulted for our hospital and he’s from Chicago. So that’s my co-incidental tie to Chicago. My dad did some construction work on the Hancock building and I stayed at the Hilton then – threw water balloons out the window to the “roof” below. Years later visiting a friend – we celebrated Halloween on Rush Street – that was fun. Best wishes.

rachelle you aren’t really moving to chicago are you????????

  • joel

Actually guys, it’s all an elaborate ruse.

    No Chicago for her.

Rachelle is, in fact, moving to Borneo where she’s slated to develop the world’s first colony of blogging pygmies.

    Sorry to let you down.

  • Winny

Nice to know that you can still smoke in Chicago pubs…

  • Jai

Bizarro Rachelle… but which one is the Bizarro one?…

  • jenny

my sister drinks at guthrie’s all the time. I think I played checkers there once.

Welcome to Chicago! Don’t listen to those other folks, you’re gonna LOVE IT. I’ll be checking back to see how you’re doing. If you need to get out of the city and see what the cornfields/soybean fields look like, let me know, cause I’m sitting in the middle about of about a million acres about 50 miles west.

Hey there, you’ve got some beautiful shots of Chicago, espcially my neighborhood, Division street, East Village, and Chicago Ave. You almost captured the essence of the neighborhood and community. I say almost because –you really need to do a little more research about the area if you are planning on living there. There is a lot of political unrest, why don’t you research it? While you’re at it maybe you should come to know some of those people that you are criticizing–like the scrawny, barely dressed girl with th sickly-colored bleached hair. Maybe she doesn’t have a college degree but I bet she could put your street-savy survival skill to the test and give you a run for your money….
I grew up in the area and somehow, looking at the pictures through your eyes is absolutely different than my perceptions of the neighborhood The evidenc of “Hispanic” presence has been ther for over 60 years. People like you warp the reality of the existance of the peopl of these communities. You’re an outsider looking in….

By the way—Pulaski day is a state holiday…All the school have off that day

I love your photos so much, from which I become to know the city. I am in China and have no chance to visit America so far. Thanks for the view from your eyes.

  • Petri Kiviniemi

    Gooood photos. Thanks!

  • Gary

I live in Milwaukee, but enjoy visiting Chicago. Your photos are great! Just wondering how you get the colors so vivid and true-to-life. I have a Mac and I use Photoshop. Can you give me some tips?

  • rachelle

i dont use a flash when i can get away with it. in ps, i correct colors/contrast and sometimes pump up the saturation. that’s about it.

  • Alicia Lee

    Dear Rachelle;

My name is Alicia Lee and I’m a recent graduate from the Auckland College of Classical Homoeopathy in Auckland, New Zealand . I am working on tidying up an assignment I did for my diploma which required me to make several mind maps detailing remedy ‘stories’. It is also possible that my mind maps may eventually be published as a resource booklet for practicing homoeopaths. I would like to place a photograph on my mind maps, both for decoration and to demonstrate the original substance of the remedy.

I am currently working on a mind map for the remedy made from Aurum – Gold and whilst searching the Internet I came across a very powerful image from your gallery – a mural of Martin Luther King:

    http://www.rachelleb.com/images/2006_02_16/king.jpg

This photograph would be absolutely perfect for my mind map and I am wondering if you would allow me permission to use it in my work? I’d be very grateful for your assistance. I can email you a copy of the mindmap if you’d like to see it.

    Thanks very much,

    Alicia Lee

    Hey,

Just wanted to say what a wonderful collection you have here. I am at work and was browsing for a good picture to write a paper on for my class. I live in the suburbs and have been up down and all around the city and to see it caught in pretty much all of its sometimes splendid and other times not so colorful glory is very nice. Congrats and hope your picture taking continues.
