World 66 is a travel site and on it they have an area where you can create a map of countries and states you’ve visited. I’ve been trying to get on the site all week to do this but their server has been getting hit hard and has been down. Today I was finally able to get on, even though Eleanor & Tien beat me to it. I’m doing ok in the states, but clearly I need to travel more internationally!

when did colorado annex wyoming and nebraska invade kansas?

  • 2 rachelle // Jan 29, 2004 at 11:14 am

i need a sugar daddy who will pay for me to travel around europe. . . peter?

  • 3 Jeff // Jan 29, 2004 at 11:21 am

how about a sugar uncle? i can’t afford being a sugar daddy.

  • 4 joe s // Jan 29, 2004 at 1:10 pm

Where would you like to go on your first overseas trip? That’s not an offer to be your sugar daddy!

Outside the US I’ve only been to Canada. But, it looks like I will get to visit my final four states this Spring.

  • 5 Richard // Jan 29, 2004 at 1:21 pm

tien, dont forget about the illinois/indiana super-state.

  • 6 Richard // Jan 29, 2004 at 1:38 pm

If you think you need to get out more, you should see mine. embarrassing.

  • 7 rachelle // Jan 29, 2004 at 1:48 pm

i think you’ve been to the same number of countries as me, right? ZERO PERCENT! ahhhH!

  • 8 tien // Jan 29, 2004 at 1:49 pm

ooh, yes, the super-state. my bad. i squared.

i think rachelle’s 2nd overseas trip (looks like she has been to mexico) should be to cananda.

  • 9 Richard // Jan 29, 2004 at 1:51 pm

i would argue that mexico and canada technically are not ‘over-seas’ since you never go over a sea.

  • 10 Richard // Jan 29, 2004 at 1:52 pm

yes. so has amanda. she’s been to canada, but not mexico.

  • 11 joel // Jan 29, 2004 at 1:58 pm

hate to tell you, but there’s nothing of reall interest to see in Canada.

Go to Europe! Australia! S. America! If anyone needs a place to stay in Brazil, my family’s quite hospitable.

  • 12 rachelle // Jan 29, 2004 at 2:03 pm

joel, do you have any hot/male/single/straight cousins down in brazil?

  • 13 joe // Jan 29, 2004 at 2:08 pm

Before this degenerates into a conversation on hot Brazillian males (which I’ve heard more than my fair share about since I used to date a hot Brazillian female), I’d just like to ask when 34 states out of 50 became 66%. I’m thinking that either the site itself gives people the wrong percentages, or Rachelle and Tien are both equally bad at math…

And I can’t help point this out. Not only am I an engineer, but I used to be a newspaper editor…

  • 14 rachelle // Jan 29, 2004 at 2:16 pm

dc is counted seperately.. does that skew the math?

so now, lets talk some more about hot brazillians!

  • 15 joel // Jan 29, 2004 at 2:22 pm

cousins? hot, straight, single, brazilian GIRL cousins - yes. Boy cousins? No …

who needs cousins though … there’s plenty of Brasileiros for everyone.

  • 16 Richard // Jan 29, 2004 at 2:25 pm

actually i lie, Amanda and i have been to Jamaica too! that makes it 3 countries (1%!!) for us.

also being an engineer, i noticed the inequity right away. yes, they do count D.C. seperately. 34/51 = 2/3. they rounded down to 66%.

b.t.w. i’ve only been to 16 states (31%), including four that rachelle hasn’t been to.

  • 17 tien // Jan 29, 2004 at 2:33 pm

can we just talk about the hot brazillian women? because that’s what we all want to know about. mmm.

canada? they have the cn tower in toronto. and they have the view of niagra falls (yes, i know the nice part of the falls in on the us side), and they have strippers! woo!

  • 18 Marty // Jan 29, 2004 at 2:43 pm

<LURK OFF> Ignoring DC as a seperate state, evenly matched on 2% of both states & countries.

Sorry I’m not Brazillian ;) Nor rich enough to be anybody’s sugar anything :( But could offer a room in the UK & some great home cooking… <LURK ON>

  • 19 Jessica // Jan 29, 2004 at 2:46 pm

now i have something to be embarassed about… i had 23% of states visited

  • 20 Jai // Jan 29, 2004 at 2:58 pm

    ugh.. 15%… :(

  • 21 Jeff // Jan 29, 2004 at 3:34 pm

plus the drinking age in canada is 18

  • 22 chuck // Jan 29, 2004 at 3:36 pm

according to the map, I have taken over north america. where are my 5 armies? i need them to continue my conquest of Europe. If only I had been dealt some Australian cards, that’s how I normally like to play.

    (50% states. 6% world.)

  • 23 scott // Jan 29, 2004 at 3:43 pm

if dc is listed as a “state” at 51, shouldn’t canadia (52) and mexicoco (53) be as well.

i’m at 27 states for 52% by the way, the unfortunate part is most of what i’ve seen comes by way of being on the road with a band or two…so that means i’ve seen crappy clubs, highways, and rest stops. america the beautiful.

  • 24 Richard // Jan 29, 2004 at 4:10 pm

Chuck, Australia is def. the way to go. Once you build up a stronghold in Indonesia and get those 2 armies per turn, you have it made.

  • 25 callalillie // Jan 29, 2004 at 4:13 pm

Good god. Mine is even worse. I guess I really am an east coast girl.

  • 26 joel // Jan 29, 2004 at 4:18 pm

    couple thoughts
    - ” ‘canadia’ and ‘mexicoco’ ” … I laughed out loud.
    - in canada the drinking age is 18, eh? That doesn’t stop 99.9% of american teenagers from starting at age 16. I know it didn’t stop me AT ALL.
    - did someone say “hot brazilian women”?!?! well
    here
    you
    go!

  • 27 tien // Jan 29, 2004 at 4:28 pm

excuse me while i pick my tongue off the floor. hoochie mamma! i demand more hot brazilian women joel!

  • 28 CJ // Jan 29, 2004 at 4:31 pm

Don’t laugh, I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve said Canadia, and spelled it that way. I guess I need to get out more.

Joel, are those your cousins, or were you just doing some sighseeing on the beach(aka-camera phone voyeurism..heehee)

  • 29 rachelle // Jan 29, 2004 at 4:32 pm

mexico’s drinking age is also 18, although that’s not why i was there.

  • 30 Jeff // Jan 29, 2004 at 4:34 pm

was it for the donkey show?

  • 31 rachelle // Jan 29, 2004 at 4:36 pm

uh. no. im not even sure what that is. it was more like obligatory trips to tijuana and down baja california when i lived in san diego. san diego is like a half hour from the border no matter where you are.

  • 32 Jeff // Jan 29, 2004 at 4:42 pm

um its when a girl, um and a donkey get to know each other in the biblical sense

  • 33 joel // Jan 29, 2004 at 4:43 pm

CJ - those aren’t any of my cousins. Those photos are pretty much a result of my brother being completely shameless and having too much fun with my camera. although, one of my cousins is quite attractive.

  • 34 rachelle // Jan 29, 2004 at 4:56 pm

i was about to say that it would be disturbing if those were your cousins.. then i saw the second photo of your cousin and found it disturbing. dont forget how hot your little sister is!! ill be asking for your brother’s digits as soon as he turns legal and stuff.

  • 35 joel // Jan 29, 2004 at 5:03 pm

we’ll have no talk of how hot my little sister is!! thank you very much!

that second picture was another “little brother special” .. mostly for Shaun’s benefit because he fell in love with my cousin.

  • 36 rachelle // Jan 29, 2004 at 5:19 pm

that stinks that jamaica counts and i was not far away from there in st thomas and that doesnt count!

  • 37 Richard // Jan 29, 2004 at 5:25 pm

I was going to add at least one more state this summer, but Rachelle decided to move to a state that I’ve already been to.

  • 38 Ed // Jan 29, 2004 at 6:34 pm

FYI - changing planes in airports doesn’t count. My girlfriend set me straight on that one when we were trying to figure out who had been to more states. I lost like five states alone on that rule!

  • 39 ian // Jan 30, 2004 at 2:58 am

you should visit europe, it rocks.

  • 40 Nan // Jan 30, 2004 at 8:57 am

I only have 45% US and right now I’m at 0% for countries, but after we go to Colombia I’ll be at 1%.

  • 41 jeannette // Jan 30, 2004 at 2:04 pm

for countries, i’m at 5%. when you look at the map, you realize how much ground you have to cover!

for the US, i’m at 70%. when i was young, my parents loved to do these big driving trips around the country. i think i’ve been to a bunch of states in the middle, but i always forget which ones are which. ;)

  • 42 Brian Poulsen // Jan 30, 2004 at 2:36 pm

Hmm I just tried out that world map generator thingy..

    Turns out I’ve:

    visited 10 states (19%)
    visited 20 countries (8%)

  • 43 rachelle // Jan 30, 2004 at 2:53 pm

19% of the states.. not bad for someone who lives in denmark!

  • 44 Brian Poulsen // Jan 30, 2004 at 4:12 pm

Rachelle - Well 6 of them was when I lived in Colorado (colorado where I lived, arizona, new mexico, nevada, california and utah). The rest was when I visited my sister back in 92 (new york, south carolina, maryland and florida).

For countries, I’ve been to most of western europe + USA and Canada.

For some reason I believe it’s a lot easier for us Europeans to go to other countries. You’ve been in 34 states.. From New york to California, is further than the distance from Denmark to Italy as an example.. On Tuesday I’m going to Sweden to watch Sweden vs. Denmark (icehockey). That’s like a 6 hour trip.. And see how small Denmark is it’s somewhere between twice or trice as small as Colorado heh. You move an hour in one direction and you hit water or a country border.

  • 45 Ed // Jan 30, 2004 at 4:49 pm

Most of my travel has been through my work in politics. I can tell you a lot about congressional swing districts, as well as red states and blue states (or in this case, green). :P
I don’t collect things, I think I became a minimalist while growing up because Mom owns an antique store and thus collects EVERYTHING. My point is, I don’t buy stuff when I go other places, not big on souvenirs. So instead I try foods that are native to the area. And therefor I can say that I *love* Louisiana but I am not big on gumbo or cajun food. :)

  • 46 Ed // Jan 30, 2004 at 4:50 pm

Oh and Heineken is MUCH better in Holland than it is in the states. WTF?!

  • 47 Brian Poulsen // Jan 31, 2004 at 5:26 am

    Heineken rocks yes…

  • 48 Brian Poulsen // Jan 31, 2004 at 5:33 am

    Ohh I forgot Illinois. That makes it 11 states (21 %). :)
    I’m quite the traveler hehe.

  • 49 KRZYSIEK // Jan 31, 2004 at 5:52 am

heineken sucks! it stinks….i prefer overseas beers, like corona :)

  • 50 Brian Poulsen // Jan 31, 2004 at 8:13 am

Well, I’d actually prefer a Tuborg or Carlsberg (both danish beers brewed by Carlsberg).

  • 51 Steve // Feb 2, 2004 at 3:28 pm

I’ve never been anywhere either … 1% of the world and, somehow, 43% of the country, but I’m cheating a bit as I’ve only stayed overnight in about half the states I’ve been to.

It’s a cool site, though, thanks for exposing me to it.

  • 52 Edwin // Jul 6, 2005 at 8:32 am

Still haven’t been to good ole NC? What’s up with that??? *lol* :-)
