Corner Bistro
Corner Bistro, West Village, Manhattan

Snow and Sleet? Ha! We laugh in your face! Nothing can keep us from the super cheap beer ($2/mug) and burgers ($5) at Corner Bistro, quite possibly the best burgers in New York.

    mmm…bacon!!!

and does anyone else hate those hokey citysearch websites? thanks for the info, but i’d almost rather not see a website.

  • 2 callalillie // Jan 28, 2004 at 8:57 am

Corner Bistro is my favorite West Village spot, aside from Chumley’s. I’m so excited that my new office space is going to be right across the street!

  • 3 rachelleb // Jan 28, 2004 at 9:00 am

ohh. chumley’s .. i’ve never been. even though i think it’s on the street i live on. and yes, those citysearch sites stink.

  • 4 dahl // Jan 28, 2004 at 9:03 am

i still have yet to visit that place, despite my friend formerly living across the street. one of these days…

  • 5 rachelleb // Jan 28, 2004 at 9:06 am

dahl - chumley’s or corner bistro?

  • 6 burger meister // Jan 28, 2004 at 9:16 am

Despite all the adulation they get, I don’t think the Corner Bistro burgers are the best, they’re too big, packed too loose, and tend to self destruct upon the first bite, and then disintegrate all over the tiny paper plate they are served on. My vote is Paul’s Burgers in the East Village. I do agree with you about CitySearch, it used to be good, but now is a pain to use.

  • 7 Nan // Jan 28, 2004 at 9:22 am

What is that burger place you took me to when I was out by you?

  • 8 Vidiot // Jan 28, 2004 at 10:09 am

Agreed with the recommendation re: Paul’s Palace (on Second Ave, just south of St. Mark’s Place) in the East Village. Best burgers in town, if not the planet.

  • 9 Jessica // Jan 28, 2004 at 10:12 am

I don’t know.. the aftermath on the plates (coffee filters) last night wasn’t too bad.

Word of advice, don’t EVER put the burger down after the first bite … or it is all over.

  • 10 scott // Jan 28, 2004 at 10:19 am

    yep corner bistro…cheap and easy.

btw no shot of the leaning tower of bistro burger?

  • 11 rachelle // Jan 28, 2004 at 10:24 am

cheap and easy! just like us! the leaning tower of bistro pose was all for naught. . .the photos were way dark and yucky in general. thanks again for getting me a new bun top when mine hit the floor!

that’s some good advice, jess.. but maybe we will have to try this EV place people are recommending.

  • 12 Jessica // Jan 28, 2004 at 10:24 am

    nice one.
    yeah, where’s the beef?

  • 13 scott // Jan 28, 2004 at 10:29 am

np rachelle our waiter was sympathetic to the situation. he claimed many a bun has hopped off the table.

and jess, where’s the beef? that burger was close to sixteen feet tall.

in other news the game was a bust but driving home in the snow was a riot.

  • 14 Jessica // Jan 28, 2004 at 10:30 am

just name the day and time. i’m in.

  • 15 tien // Jan 28, 2004 at 10:31 am

oooh…sounds like we also need to take a trip to chumley’s. i’ve been before, and it’s great!

  • 16 Mike // Jan 28, 2004 at 10:54 am

Yum. My top 3: Corner Bistro, Walker’s in Tribeca, and this hole in the wall in the middle of the Bronx with no seating (so you end up sitting on a stoop in a rough neighborhood eating your burger).

  • 17 rachelle // Jan 28, 2004 at 11:45 am

nancy, the place we went to is island burger in my old neighborhood. i like island burger for the many many many burger variations that they have. corner bistro is more of a purists burger. they only have about 5 things on their entire menu. burger, cheese burger, bistro burger, chili, chili burger, and chicken sandwich, i think.

  • 18 Farid // Jan 28, 2004 at 11:45 am

Hmm..is this acros the street from Day-O?

  • 19 rachelle // Jan 28, 2004 at 11:48 am

farid, i’m not familiar with day-o, but when i looked it up on citysearch, it seems to be right by corner bistro.. so i’d say “yes, it just may be right accross the street from corner bistro”

  • 20 joe s // Jan 28, 2004 at 1:02 pm

Err, more like “across many streets from Day-O”. Corner Bistro is at W. 4th and Jane. Day-O is on Greenwich Ave. near 7th Ave.

What about Pop Burger, with those cute little burgers?

  • 21 jeannette // Jan 28, 2004 at 1:36 pm

pop burger makes a good burger, and it’s not outrageously priced. however, everything else is really expensive there. i probably won’t be going there for a burger fix anytime soon.

i heard there’s a burger place in the parker meridian (?) that does a great burger. it’s a little hidden burger joint. anyone been? (maybe that should go on your list, r?)

i like island burgers & shakes. they have some awesome burger combinations. yummmm.

corner bistro i never try to go to anymore. there’s always a huge line, and the burgers aren’t THAT great that i’d want to wait for 20 min to get a seat! but def. something to try once.

what is the leaning tower of burgers?

  • 22 rachelle // Jan 28, 2004 at 2:05 pm

    parker meridian? wtf?

you have to go to corner bistro early. we were there at like 6 on a tuesday night. no wait at all. the leaning tower of bistro was my burger. there was bun, onion, burger, cheese, bacon, tomato, lettuce, bun. i tried to take a photo of it and the top bun fell off and landed on the floor so scott found our waiter and got me a new bun.

  • 23 Jeff // Jan 28, 2004 at 2:11 pm

    Its called Burger Joint

  • 24 Jeff // Jan 28, 2004 at 2:15 pm

Rachelle, where are the snow pics?

  • 25 Linus // Jan 28, 2004 at 2:31 pm

I’ve always been fond of the ludicrous burgers at Jackson Hole. When I was freshly back from Europe I used to take visiting Germans there, mostly so I could watch their faces when the food arrived: pure horror at this massive pile of steaming beef. Fun stuff, but hardly the place for casual eating.

  • 26 Keith // Jan 28, 2004 at 3:00 pm

Jackson Hole’s burgers are intense and scary huge… they are good but Paul’s Burgers in the East Village gets my vote for having the most badass burgers in town.

  • 27 tien // Jan 28, 2004 at 3:36 pm

they also have grilled cheese at corner bistro.

  • 28 rachelle // Jan 28, 2004 at 3:38 pm

    and grilled cheese with bacon

  • 29 dahl // Jan 28, 2004 at 3:39 pm

rachelle, i was talking about the corner bistro, but i’ve never been to chumleys either.

  • 30 joe s // Jan 28, 2004 at 4:17 pm

Don’t forget the shakes at Island Burgers and Shakes!

I had an awesome cheeseburger at Nice Matin on the UWS a few weeks ago. They call it the five napkin burger. You understand why when it arrives.

  • 31 dmadeo // Jan 28, 2004 at 4:58 pm

Umm, Island burger had a small accident and will be closed for the next six weeks, at least that’s what their voice mail said. Of course I was trying to order in on a really nasty weather night, so my cursing may have glossed over some of the details.

    Personally, I like McHale’s burgers. 46th and 8th ave.

  • 32 dmadeo // Jan 28, 2004 at 4:59 pm

On the plus side, maybe they’ll be able to put in a fryer while they’re refurbishing Island Burger.

  • 33 rachelle // Jan 28, 2004 at 5:06 pm

i saw on citysearch that island burger is closed right now because they had a fire and were renovating .. i was like “wha? they dont even have a fryer in there….. but maybe they could add one now!!!” i used to order from island burger all the time when i lived on 49th/9th. this sounds weird but they have really really really good cookies that are HUGE.

  • 34 Phil // Jan 28, 2004 at 5:13 pm

My top burger joints in New York:

McHale’s at 8th and 46th has the biggest, best burger I’ve ever stuffed myself with. I used to eat lunch here about once a month when I worked in Times Square. Don’t plan on eating dinner if you have lunch there. The turkey burgers, club sandwiches, and fish & chips (during Lent) are also excellent. The place is a dive, but don’t let that stop you from eating there; it looks much worse on the outside than it does on the inside.

Corner Bistro is great, but exceedingly messy. You can’t beat the prices, though.

Jackson Hole has the best conventional burgers in my neighborhood (Upper East Side), but I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention Sassy’s Sliders, at 3rd and 86th. For about $6, you get four mini-burgers, fries, and a drink, much better than McDonald’s. It’s fast food, but so much better for just a little more money.

  • 35 joe s // Jan 28, 2004 at 6:39 pm

Sigh, this thread made me hungry, so while I was in Hell’s Kitchen I walked by Island Burgers. The sign on the door said they are closed because of a fire on Jan 16th, but they hope to open again as soon as possible. No date was given.

  • 36 Andrew // Jan 28, 2004 at 7:43 pm

Corner Bistro is good. Island Burgers is (are?) good– too bad they’re closed.

Big Nick’s has the best burgers on the Upper West Side. (Broadway around 77th st.)

Peter Luger’s does a quality burger as does Blue Smoke..

  • 37 corie // Jan 28, 2004 at 9:52 pm

Has anyone mentioned french fries and gravy? Corner Bistro is really good for that…but not as good as the White Horse. Who needs a burger when you can have french fries and gravy? Or maybe that’s just me.

  • 38 Ed // Jan 29, 2004 at 2:23 am

“French fries and gravy.” Dude, my cholesterol went up just reading that line… :P

  • 39 rachelleb // Jan 29, 2004 at 7:30 am

french fries + gravy + cheese = disco fries, right?

  • 40 joe s // Jan 29, 2004 at 9:09 am

french fries + gravy + cheese curds = poutine

  • 41 David Axford // Mar 19, 2004 at 9:19 am

Can anyone tell me if Island Burgers & Shakes is open now?

  • 42 Toemoss // Oct 9, 2004 at 10:44 pm

The burger Joint in the Park Meridian is well worth checking out. Don’t go at lunch time, it will be packed to the teeth. Guess what? Only place in NYC to get a draught of Sam Adams for 2.50 ! and the burgers? fugeddaboudit poifict!!
And the fries are done right.
