Homemade Chili, Brooklyn Heights, Brooklyn

Watching Football, Brooklyn Heights, Brooklyn

Saltine Eating Contest, Brooklyn Heights, Brooklyn
So then after visiting the New York Transit Museum, Tien, Jeannette and I watched the 2 football games that were on last night. I’m sure everyone knows that the Pats and the Panthers are now going to the Superbowl. The games weren’t as interesting to me as the other playoff games, but maybe that’s just because the Packers lost last week. I don’t know. The most exciting part was breaking open the Hillshire Yard-O-Beef Summer Sausage that I brought back from Wisconsin the last time I was home* and also making chili. I wanted to make it mid-western style, with elbow macaroni but I forgot to buy the noodles when we were at the store. Oh well. We also made chocolate chip cookies.
For the first time, I got to use the Brett Favre beer bottle cooler that my Aunt Sue gave me as a gift when I saw her in DC this past Thanksgiving. I also have one somewhere.. maybe packed away under my bed.. that is a wedge of cheese and your bottle/can drops into it. And I’m not really sure how it happened, but Jeannette, Tien and I got into a saltine cracker eating competition. I found out that I can only fit 7 saltines into my mouth at one time. I’m sure Tien is going to be picking cracker crumbs out of his couch for years to come.
*I also brought home a 6-pack of Leinenkugel’s Honey Weiss, one of my favorite beers that is not available here but Jess and I already polished that off a while ago! Thanks to my brother for getting the beer & sausage for me. Also, congrats to my dad who was just recognized for 25 years of service at Hillshire!

Did you make the chili with the sausage?

no, it was summer sausage so it wouldnt be that good for chili. we just sliced the sausage and ate it with cheese & crackers. and used hamburger in the chili.

Thank you for recognising my 25 years of service at Hillshire Farms.
I’ll put money down that Jeanette WON the cracker eating contest. I’ve seen many pictures of her “mouth-wide-open” near food!!! She must be a starving girl !

hahhhhahha.. that made me laugh.. and call jeannette & tell her!
5 tien // Jan 19, 2004 at 9:12 pm
there was actually no decisive winner.
6 rachelleb // Jan 19, 2004 at 9:21 pm
yeh. we were trying to eat 7 in one minute. each of us had a different strategy. tien tried to eat them one at at time, i stacked them and took bites, jeannette ate 3 at a time. in the end no one had any crackers left on their plate but all of us had our mouths full. we were playing with fear factor rules where you had to have an empty mouth when the time is up.. so we all lost.

Re: not using sausage in chili - Whew! You all had me worried there for a second.

i would have thought that the saltine eating photo would have done for rachelleb.com what jen chung’s t-shirt did for gothamist, but i guess not.

Rachelle, you’re very brave to post such an unflattering photo of yourself. Chow down, babe!

19 Jeff // Jan 20, 2004 at 4:39 pm

Gosh you’re fun to watch Rachelle. I’m a little offended though…. that you can stuff crackers in your mouth and still look cute. I see the #4 bottle cooler I got you for Christmas comes in handy at parties!
21 rachelleb // Jan 20, 2004 at 9:52 pm
yes, thanks again! i think jeannette & tien both got a kick out of the bottle cooler!

mmmmm… Leine’s
I’m a big fan of the red and northwoods. When my friends from Illinois go back home for the holidays they drive back down here with an ungodly number of cases of Leine’s in the back of their cars. Their like modern-day bootleggers… ‘cept it ain’t illegal and all…

mike w - rachelle is cute no matter what she’s doing. even if she’s shotgunning saltines.
dad bowden: you are so right! i am always hungry, AND i have a huge mouth. that makes for good eatin!
i think tien won the saltines contest, right? i had a huge lump of wet saltine goo in my mouth, and your crumbs were ALL over your lap, rachelle. tien just had a bit of cracker in his mouth.
aunt susie - that is the BEST gift EVER. i absolutely love the beer/soda cooler!!
24 tien // Jan 21, 2004 at 9:14 am
well, i’m not sure that i technically won, since we were playing with fear factor rules. but i think i had a little less than you jeannette.
25 Mike W // Jan 21, 2004 at 10:50 am
Jeannette - I’ll take your word for it. After all, you’ve seen her in action!
26 Vidiot // Jan 21, 2004 at 12:45 pm
What, no whistling? Back in camp, we had to eat seven saltines and then try to whistle.
Also: mmmmmm….Leinies. Especially with cheese curds and brats.
27 rachelle // Jan 21, 2004 at 1:02 pm
we couldnt even get them swallowed let alone whistle after the 1 minute
28 Aunt Susie // Jan 21, 2004 at 8:47 pm
I’m glad you liked the beer cooler Jeanette! I think Rachelle liked it too. What a good Packer find! I always try to pick up something unique for Rachelle, I was so happy to see she got some use out of it!
