Last night Corie, David, Dahlia, Tien and I got together for a big ‘ol rice-o-rama. First we went to dinner at Rice (no photos), which is a restaurant where nearly everything on the menu has rice in it. The cuisine in the entrees are eclectic mix of everything from Mexican to Thai to Malaysian. I had miso soup, pad thai (rice noodles!) and a Pacifico. For dessert, to take home for later, I ordered.. what else?… rice krispy treats! They come in some really cute packaging and were really good the last time I was at Rice so I couldn’t pass it up.

To continue on the rice theme, for dessert we went to Rice to Riches, a restaurant that serves over 20 flavors of rice pudding. Rice pudding is something I decided I hated when I was a little kid and never tried again but I was willing to give it another shot. I got two flavors, Caramel Yogurt Crackdown and Hazelnut Chocolate Bear Hug. I thought they were pretty tasty but our serving size was a bit more than I could handle so I took about half of it home. (I walked home from Nolita [North of Little Italy] to the West Village in the freezing cold and wind [yes, I am insane] and half expected the pudding to be frozen when I got there but it wasn’t.)

Rice to Riches is really going to stand out in my mind for a long time. The design of their store and presentation of their product is really thought through well and is carried out in every minute detail, down to the sign in the restroom telling employees to wash their hands before going back to work. When you walk in you feel like you’re in some sort of weird Jetsons/70′s lounge. The the booths have tables that hang from the ceiling, 3 flat-screen panels display cute animations as well as the menu, and everything is that ellipse shape. Even the dish that they serve the pudding in, which you get to take home. I would love to take Nancy here because I think she would love the design as well as the pudding.

    Dinner at Rice

My main course, the rice pilaf. More rice pilaf. Dessert at rice…Rice Krispy treats, what else? Last night, I got together for dinner with a Corie, David (hopefully a future blogger), Dahlia, Rachelle, mostly blog friends that are becoming…

    Dessert at Rice to Riches

After dinner at Rice, Corie, David, Dahlia, Rachelle and I went for dessert at Rice to Riches, heaven for anyone that enjoys rice pudding. I’m not that big on rice pudding, but I had to have more rice after…

  • tien

your caramel yogurt crackdown tasted like cheese. while i like cheese, it was not what i was looking for in the rice pudding.

  • rachelle

jess almost barfed when she saw the close-up photo of the rice pudding. it was kind of funny.

  • Nan

I love rice pudding! What a great place. We need more places like that here in Milwaukee. Like even “Rice” would be good. More specialty places. We have “Noodles” which has been a hit in the burbs and down by college for it’s cheap, tasty noodle dishes. I bet Chicago has some great places like this – more than Milwaukee I’m sure.

  • CJ

That place is so awesome looking, I’m so jealous of all the cool places you get to go to. Man, all the places to eat around here have sawdust on the floor and antlers hanging on the walls. I need to move away from Texas.

  • tien

you know, sadly, i think rice pudding and pudding in general looks like barf…if not something worse.

  • CJ

Pudding may look like..um..you know..but good thing it doesn’t taste like that stuff, most of the time anyway. You know, not to jump on the bandwagon called “let list what else that pudding looks like”, but that chocolate hazelnut looks like refried beans.

    *drools*…mmm….mexican food..

  • rachelle

    noodles is a chain, no?

refried beans look like dog doo doo but i love them anyway!

  • victoria

i’ve been wanting to check out Rice to Riches since it opened. I can’t believe y’all braved this crappy weather to go. I loooove the dishes! and you get to take them home?

  • CJ

thank you for ruining my refried bean experience for life, i will forever be reminded of dog poo whenever I order the El Gringo plate at my favorite mexican restuarant, La Parilla. j/k ;)

The pictures on this and Tien’s site are so vibrant, I love them! I need to get me a good camera, I’ve been working on my site, and need to add some photos.

  • rachelle

we are either all very brave or all very stoopid for going out in that weather just for rice!!! yes, you get to take the dishes home. corie has every color except red, although she admitted to have never using them except for using the spoon as a spitball launcher. (it’s very flat and unspoonlike with a nice angle that would work well as a launcher)

  • callalillie

you WALKED home? that’s about as nuts as me wearing the short skirt yesterday.

    Rice-A-Thon

Four bloggers and a future one decided to be brave and venture out into the unbearable cold last night.

  • Vidiot

Rice to Riches is indeed great. I have a matched set of four of the bowls in my kitchen cabinet at the moment.

(Shameless plug: More pics of the place here.)

  • rachelle

vidiot. funny. jonmc. i used to read his site a lot but have slacked off in a major way.

    nice photos, thanks for sharing!

  • curious

    what big decisions Rachelle?

  • rachelle

when i am ready to say, you will know

  • curious

so why the tease? Btw, great site, very nicely constructed.

  • Nan

yes, noodles is a chain. http://www.noodles.com

see, people are anxious about your big decisions. do tell us – soon! :-)

  • Kelly

we have noodles here too. They have a Wisconsin cheese dish. I want the Indian bread place though…mmmmmmm

  • joe

I’ve never heard something as crazy as a place that has 20 varieties of rice pudding. I prefer just making my own. Then there’s lots more for me.

  • mom & dad

hhmmm. We love rice pudding. We’ve only had the cinnamon/raisin kind but i’m sure we’d love them all ! YUM

  • joel

funny …. looking back at tony’s last couple days (he went down to NY this weekend) he ALSO went to Rice to Riches. if your paths had crossed I would be absolutely stunned.

  • curious

see Nan wants to know as well, so hold the rice and spill the beans!

  • tien

ha, hold the rice and spill the beans. that’s great.

i would think nancy already knows. but, that’s just my guess.

  • curious

…well, It’s none of my business I guess, it’s just you have to ask when you see a tease line about “big decisions” on a blog site you just happened to find….good site tho’

  • rachelleb

joel, i just spotted tony in photographs on jake dobkin’s site

  • Gasinas

Sorry about the first entry. My fingers don’t always go where they should.

  • RachelleB

The NYT reported that Rice to Riches may be a money laundering front for a gambling ring the owner was busted for running!
