The High Line

January 31st, 2004 · 45 Comments

When Mike invited me to join his group of urban explorers in going to the High Line I was really excited. Hopefully the Friends of the High Line‘s preservation plans will go through, but I wanted to experience the railroad as it is now, raw, before that. It wasn’t easy to walk it in the snow for hours, I was completely wet and freezing to death, but it was definitely worth it.

The High Line was built in the 1930s to elevate dangerous and congested railroad traffic from New York City’s streets. The rise of trucking in the 1950s led to a drop in rail freight on the High Line and in the 1960s part of the High Line was torn down. The final freight train to run on the High Line carried 3 carloads of frozen turkeys in 1980. In 1993 another chuck was demolished. Now there are plans to preserve the High Line and to convert it into a public park.

It wasn’t easy to walk it in the snow for hours, I was completely wet and freezing to death, but it was definitely worth it. I will be posting many more photos soon.

The beginning of our walk, at about 33rd Street and 11th Avenue.

A No Trespassing sign, looking west towards New Jersey. You can see that we were at the same level as the street lights from the avenue below.

Looking down to the east at the Hudson Yards.

Looking west over the partially frozen Hudson River to New Jersey.

Looking south.

Somebody marked part of the rail for some reason.

More of the Hudson Yards.

At about 30th Street, looking east. The Empire State Building is on the left in the photo.

There is barbed wire everywhere along the High Line. It’s obvious they don’t want anyone up there.

Looking back west from where we came from. In the right of the photo is a billboard that is over 11th Avenue, which goes under the High Line here.

Steve eggs Tien on as he makes a snow angel.

A chimney stack catches the early morning sun.

The first of our major barriers. This wall is completely blocking off the railway.

A closer look and we see that there is a hole cut in the wall.

No problem!

Adam assisting Mike through the hole in the wall.

The other side of the wall has a beautiful mural of the view on the other side of the wall. “Save the Tracks” is spelled out in the clouds.

Save the Tracks.

Shortly after the first wall we came up to another one. Tien runs ahead to check it out.

This wall we had to lay down and shimmy under. Here, Steve peeks out from under the wall.

Tien down in the rails.

Moose Graffiti. I also have photographed a Moose tag in the Street Writing Project.

Through a hole in the wall of graffiti I take a peek at what’s going on below.

More graffiti.

And more graffiti.

Coming up to a building. Mike, Adam and I take the high road and Steve and Tien take the low road.

Inside the building there was tons of debris. These look like some sort of old machine parts.

Garbage.

Wire.

Chair.

Mike spotted these mannequins in a building east of the High Line.

Near the end of the High Line. We couldn’t find the way down so we ended up walking all the way to the beginning!

A Trip to the Apple Store

I love the Apple Store in SoHo so when Eric and Ted said they were leaving to go there after work I tagged along. I wanted to check out the in-ear headphones and the iPod Minis but they didn’t have either of them in stock. I also was looking at iTrip, which I’m interested in getting if I end up moving myself to Chicago. Eric was looking at new laptops. Ted purchased SimCity 4 and I cannot wait to get my hands on it!

I am in denial right now about my new position/boss requiring me to work on a PC laptop.

Apparently I Need to Get Out More

World 66 is a travel site and on it they have an area where you can create a map of countries and states you’ve visited. I’ve been trying to get on the site all week to do this but their server has been getting hit hard and has been down. Today I was finally able to get on, even though Eleanor & Tien beat me to it. I’m doing ok in the states, but clearly I need to travel more internationally!

Jessica, Tien, Jeannette, Yvan and I had dinner at Compass tonight to celebrate NYC Restaurant Week*. Really swank place, they’ve won awards for their interior design. The food is wonderfully cooked and beautifully presented. I had the sweet garlic cappuccino with Parmesan croutons, the stuffed skate wing with crushed potatoes and sauce meununiere and the apple strudel with caramel sauce, gianduja and vanilla ice cream. Also, before dinner at the bar we had these really delicious breadsticks and after dinner we were each given a cranberry scone to take home for breakfast the next morning. And that’s not all! Another round of desserts included a plate of blueberry panna cotta surrounded by pistachio cookies, coconut bon bons and some chocolate truffles (more on this later!). So.. Compass.. excellent place. Really really nice… until we roll in. Then things quickly go to hell (in a good way!).

I don’t know if it was the wine that we were drinking or the breadsticks at the bar that were laced with an addictive drug (they really were, I confirmed it with the hot bartender!) or if there was just something in the air.. but we were entirely up to no good the whole evening. We go to one of the best restaurants that I’ve been to in quite a while and forgot to check our 6th-grade humor at the door! But that’s ok.. our waiter was into it! Before we even ordered or dinner Yvan and Jessica placed a bet that had Jessica ordering her dinner something like this:

Jessica: “The beef shoulder… does that have a bone in it? I want the big bone inside, pleeeeese!” (as she says please she makes a gesture towards.. uh.. her netherlands).
Waiter: “Uh. Can you say that again?”
Jessica: ” I want the big bone inside, pleeeese!” (gesture again)
Everyone at the table: Laughing hysterically and hiding behind their menus.. Jess tries to explain the bet.
Waiter: “These guys paid you to say that!?”
Jessica: “Yeh!”
Waiter: “I have to go get our manager.” (He now disappears and we wonder if we’re going to get kicked out of this fine establishment. He reappears with the manager)
Waiter: “Please repeat what you just said.”
Jessica: “I want the BIG BONE INSIDE, pleeese!” (head toss & gesture)
Manager: Cracks up laughing
Waiter: Cracks up laughing
Everyone at the table including Jess: Hyperventilating
Manager: “Sure thing! I’ll have a private talk with the chef about that!”

Our waiter’s name at Compass was Bobby and he was awesome. Really fun guy.. he could see that we were a fun group and he made sure we had a great time. He was honest about selections on the menu and spent a ton of time at our table chatting with us, laughing and joking. He joined in on our dirty conversations.. Jessica even told him a prison sex joke we learned last night (thanks, Jeff!). And someone who will remain nameless, ahem.. me, had to shake it like a Polaroid picture. A riot. Bobby is southern Irish gent who sure could hold his liquor. And made sure that the four hours we were there were spent eating wonderful food and laughing our guts out between bites. This was all great for us and probably very annoying to the tables around us.. but oh well! There are many things that went on and that were talked about that will not be mentioned here and also many photos, including one on Bobby’s cellphone cam that is particularly embarrassing to me, that I hope will never see the light of day.. I just hope Bobby has a job tomorrow. That’s all I’ve got to say!! Oh, and just so you know, a 30% tip will get you a free round of drinks, an additional dessert or two and this adorable photo:

*Restaurant Week is a week in which over 170 New York City restaurants allow the likes of us to eat in their fancy establishments for a reasonable price. During Restaurant Week three-course lunches are $20.04 and three-course dinners are $30.04.
