Lamp at The Living Room, Lower East Side, Manhattan
1. Has anyone read any good books on web design, web development, interaction design, information architecture, and/or photography lately?
2. My billing cycle ends next week and includes charges for my bandwidth overage from when I was getting 2,000 – 3,000 hits/day to the Street Writing Project. The bill is only going to be about $112 but that’s $112 that won’t be spent on your Christmas presents! If you want to donate a dollar (or two) to my hosting bill click here. After I pay this bill, the problem should be fixed since Peter is hosting the project for me on 3jane servers.
3. I’m experimenting with an “On This Day” feature on the right-hand sidebar. It will list posts from the current day on previous years. I’m not sure it’s working right yet, so be patient with it for a while.
4. I’m currently wondering why I’m so tired, why airfare is so expensive, if I could live in Chicago, if my niece’s eyes will stay blue, and what Kelly & Jeff & I will be up to when they get here on Saturday. I’m feeling a bit depressed about holiday weight gain (and Christmas isn’t even here yet!) but am managing to enjoy Lou Bega’s Mambo #5 and the photo above I found from my visit to The Living Room in October.
heck YA you could live in chicago!
right. i knew you would be the first to comment on that. every time kristin is in town from chicago we talk about it, among other things. how about if you make a donation to my hosting bill so that i may SOME DAY (not soon) be able to afford a move?
I believe living in Chicago requires you to root for da’Bears. I’ll double-check with a friend of mine that used to live there, but this can be considered a fore-warning.
Hm. Holiday-weight-gain. Eh. To me, it is just a sign that someone knows how to enjoy life at the special times of the year where we should be allowed to just let loose and have fun. Although, thank goodness the entire year isn’t like that or peopled would rename me Mr. Staypuft. Besides, without holiday-weight-gain, people wouldn’t make New Year’s resolutions.
Truth?
Whoops, Click on my name th read the article
1. Chicago? This is New York City… I did spend Halloween on Rush street once – that was fun, and there’s the Art Institute….
2. Photoshop – The monthly or so NAPP magazine, PHotoshop User is great. and Scott Kelby’s Photo-Retouching Secrets is amazing. I get most ideas from those two although there are great sites on the web.
3. Web – never found a book I liked. Info I get is from the web sites like glish, a list apart, sitepoint, projectsevin and the thenoodleincident.
Sure could use a book with all the good stuff in one place.
re: your hosting bill. why don’t you e-mail Gawker and tell them that posting a link to your street writing project is costing you over $100 and that you’d appreciate it if they paid the bill since they didn’t ask for your permission to post the link. at the very least, you’d feel better.
if you google ‘street writing’, your site (or a link to your site) is #1, 2 & 3.
i guess you could ask gawker for money for linking to you without your permission, but isn’t the internet all about linking to other ppl? like what happens to ppl who own websites who get mentioned on any big website and then a huge influx of traffic?
chicago? why are you thinking of moving???
holiday weight gain is always a little depressing. i’m right there with ya sista (as i eat a piece of cake). maybe we should try sleeping thru the winter? when we wake up in the spring, we will be all svelte.
Thanks for getting the book suggestions.. how about any good design (layout) or photography books out there. Time to use up the career account!
How come Kristin does that.. everytime.. wonder how Chicago would be.. was thinking the same thing.
Love the light – is that the one I asked you to take a pic of? We need to go listen to some good music again.. any suggestions?!
Chicago is a lot closer to us all ! Maybe it’s all about family ! – I’m with Nan ~~~~ Chicago is only a little over an hour from Oak Creek !
Statistics show that the average American gains 7-10 pounds from Halloween through the new year……
ok. first of all… i dont have plans to move to chicago, but it’s always in the back of my mind for “maybe some day”.
joe – thanks.. that made me feel a little better
arthur – thanks for the recommendations. I have the scott kelby book (thans partly to jeannette & yvan!) and i love it.
wendy – although i wasn’t prepared for the gawker link, i really appreciated it. i’m hoping that i’m more prepared now for if it ever happens again.
richard – and #4!
jeannette – sounds like a plan!
jess – yes, this is your light!
to everyone who’s contributed to my hosting bill – walt (#1), kevin, dy & jeannette – thanks for supporting my habit! it means a lot.
way to kill eight birds with one stone.
and i seem to be packing on the pounds too. stupid moving into close proximity of the parents. damn free lunch and dinners! stupid mcdonalds breakfast and tempting doughnut!
jess, good new music? I saw the most hilarious video EVER yesterday. My roommate saw this video by a band called “The Darkness” after Vh1′s “I love the 80′s” (or whatever it’s called) and thought it was originally FROM the 80′s. Turns out the band is a present day thing and they’re from england. The Darkness – I believe in a thing called love. Ridiculous song.
… no idea why I had to mention that
mmmm… donuts.
Mr. Scorpio says productivity is up 2%, and it’s all because of my motivational techniques, like donuts and the possibility of more donuts to come.
—Homer
It’s probably a good thing that I can’t even remember the last time I had a donut…
Joel, i just read an article that The Darkness’s lead singer was mistook for a wanted criminal and held by police in JFK airport. Here’s the article.
haha .. that’s funny. I bet it was a thinly veiled excuse to just arrest him cuz they hated their music.
I still don’t know whether I like their stuff, or hate it. it’s weird.
i didn’t contribute much, but hopefully other ppl will see fit to donate a little bit to their friendly neighborhood web gal, too, and maybe your bill won’t be so ugly?
i get a lot of pleasure out of your site. it’s pretty much a daily read.
Just curious if your bill is paid up yet? I was one of the many who found your site from g[awker/othamist]. If you’re not using dreamhost anymore, I’d hate to put money on your account there.
the bill’s not paid up yet.. i’m still with dreamhost.
a big thanks to joe s and rei kirsch for their donations today!
random question, semi related to hosting bills, will street writing go on hiatus because of the winter weather?
obviously, you can take pictures when there is no snow, i think i just like saying “hiatus.”
I was thinking about that.. i don’t think it will go on an official hiatus, I’ll still look around for it.. but since it will probably be hard to find during the winter, it may seem as though it’s on a hiatus.
Want to shout out to dmadeo in my old hood, Hell’s Kitchen, for his recent donation to my hosting bill. Thanks!
You’re welcome, rachelle. I found your site via the street writing link on forgotten-ny, so i figured a small donation was in order.
tien, is hiatus as fun to say as ‘bulbous’ or ‘bouffant’?
Ok. I made my donation for the “someday” Chicago fund.
I am almost half-way to paying off my dreamhost bill now. thanks nancy!
When is this bill due? If I pay some of your bill for you do I still have to get you a Christmas present?
for most everyone else (like tien’s donation today), yes it counts as a christmas gift. for you, no! thanks tien!
thanks to joel for his “subscription fee” donation to my hosting bill!!!
