Bitter Former Customer

Carwash

iPods irreplaceable battery lasts only 18 months

On the corner of 6th Avenue and Broome Street in SoHo there is a car wash that is closed, it’s under renovation. Towering above the car wash is an enormous ad for Apple’s iPod. Around the car wash is a make-shift plywood wall that, from beginning to end, is plastered with the same ads. With graffiti stenciled on the ads, a bitter former customer gets his revenge.

    Is that true????

  • rachelleb

everything but the last line. In the last line i was theorizing about who sprayed the graffiti on all of the ipod ads.

  • rachelleb

wait, did you mean the part about the ipod battery? i guess i’ll find out…

    OH!
“If your iPod’s battery dies, or becomes faulty, it is not a user serviceable part.” - Aussie IT article

Sheds light on the whole iPod batt snafu… Previously I thought that iPod users would be stuck with dead firmware – something about a non-user-serviceable batt stinks though. Should be the easiest thing with portables, don’t you think?

    Rachelle reports. You decide.

  • Mike

Wow, I guess I’ll just have to buy a regular old mp3 player instead!! They use reliable NiCd’s or NiMH rechargeable batteries for only pennies a day!

  • tien

don’t both NiCd and NiMH both have battery memory?

  • jeannette

i meant about the battery life. i guess you’ll have to keep me informed. i’m sure if the battery starts sucking, you can get something from the apple folks.

  • Mike

NiMH have no battery memory like old NiCd’s. But who cares; they are cheaply and easily replaced. Who need Apple’s proprietary battery issues?!!

  • Mike

Plus, in a pinch, regular ol’ batteries will work!

  • rachelle

mike! i could never marry a guy who is anti-ipod!

  • Mike

And I could never marry a girl who goes for status over functionality!

And I could never marry a girl who goes for name brand recognition status over functionality & practicality!

  • rachelle

yes, that’s me.. status monger! why cant you just say you like the ipod a little? When Tien told me he didnt like Mexican food I told him he wasn’t my friend any more. Low and behold a few days later he told me he *did* like it, but just not beans.

  • technofreak

Well, I’ve read much about the battery debate:

way to drag me into this bitter love quarrel.

  • rachelle

so the batteries ARE NOT unreplaceable? nice! Thanks for the info technofreak & petrol. btw, a guy I work with has an old skool 1st generation ipod.. he says he’s had it 3 years and has had no problem with the battery.

  • chuck

there’s much, much more to the iPod than “status” or “brand recognition.” there is convenience, portability, quality, storage and compatibility, to name a few.

mike, do you eat bran flakes and drive an K-car?

  • Texas T-Bone

I don’t have an iPod (would like one), but can speak as a longtime Apple computer user that their products are far superior to anything else I’ve used. Still, like any other product, nothing is perfect and things will eventually go wrong. I’ve heard the earlier iPods were subject to a few snafus just as any new product that comes to market. But to each his or her own!

    OH SNAP!!

And I could never marry a girl who goes for name brand recognition status over functionality & practicality!

    OH NO HE DI’IN’T!!!!!

  • rachelleb

joel – your comments always crack me up!!!! keep’em comin’!

  • joel

haha … glad I can be of service ;) .

oh, and my previous comment is a LOT funnier when I say it out loud!

by the way – I really have wondered how peer reaction would be if I got something LIKE the iPod instead of a real iPod. Would people hate me? Insult me? Call me “ghetto”? chase me out of town with torches and pitchforks?

    Seriously.

  • rachelleb

if you’re not going to get the ipod then dont get something sorta like it. go completely different. it’s like those people who make us cringe by driving trackers instead of wranglers.

  • joel

    re: Trackers instead of Wranglers.

    ew.

    just … ewwwww.

  • jeannette

i think i am kind of anti-apple. a little bit. (although i was a mac user from the age of 9 until the end of college. i think this has to do with the fact that apple led the field for a long time. and that my dad paid for all my computer gear.)

chuck, to respond to your statement: “there’s much, much more to the iPod than “status” or “brand recognition.” there is convenience, portability, quality, storage and compatibility, to name a few.”

i think a non-ipod mp3 player can provide all of the qualities you list for an ipod, at a lower cost. does the ipod add that much value for that extra money? i would say it’s more about design than any actual added features (extra memory, better battery life, etc.). my 20g archos jukebox mp3 player cost around $300 a few years ago when the 20g ipod cost something exorbitant. nowadays, i think it’s $250 vs. $400.

    (what is a k-car?)

  • tien

    k-car. for you koreans…silly!

  • petrol

I’ve the netMD-n707. True, it’s little more than a glorified cassette player, but the pc-MD transfer makes up for it not being an iPod. It was really cheap when I got it, 200$ or so. I’d wait til the iPod’s in its third or 4th generation hardware (c. 2006? maybe) and nth revision software just to be on the safe side. (iT4W also needs a bit of work.) Plus at that point, the original 5GB units would be selling for absolutely next-to-nothing.

    Chuckles:
Brand flakes make for a healthy colon. You’ll be regretting your statement when yours rots and falls out on your 55th birthday.

  • rachelleb

what’s a k car? are you kidding? i used to ride in one in an almost daily basis in high school. heres a photo of one

  • Joe

That’s a little scary. That K-car looks suspiciously like my old K-car. Ed Rooney drove the K too.

  • chuck

jeannette, i agree with you that other mp3 players share many of those same qualities as the iPod, but for me, someone who uses a mac at work, a different one at home, and who has a .mac account, the iPod is the only one that synchronizes all three. my contacts and calendar are automatically synched. (and it has a calendar and contact functino.) i can seamlessly transfer files other than music back and forth.

and i feel that because i bought a new generation oen, i’m guaranteed to benefit from some new programs coming down the line. also, as a stockholder in apple corp, i want to support their product line. and lastly, the iPod is just plain fucking cool, or, perhaps more importantly, is cooler than anything else. this is new york city, after all, where you pay $1800/mo for a small studio apartment.

  • CJ(aka technofreak)

    joel,
I agree with Rachel, you have to go against the grain, and get the “Anti-Ipod”, so to speak.

How about this?(maybe u can inspire a comeback **shudder**)
    the Ultimate Anti-Ipod

  • rachelle

chuck – i agree with much of what you are saying, but what you are really proving is that apple really is a cult!

  • tien

but it’s the best damn cult out there! and maybe the 2nd most expensive one after scientology…

  • petrol

LOL @ pic of Kcar! XD

  • Anthony

Great photos as always, Rachelle! You’re the best gal-pal ever!

  • rachelleb

cool, thanks for the that link, walt!

and thanks, anthony. glad you like the photos.

Check the “Convince your parents” section.

  • tien

okay, that might be the coolest site ever. right ahead of that how legos are made one (which is right here).

  • rachelle

that’s an awesome site. is it an official apple site or is someone else trying to convince parents to buy ipods for their kids?

  • matt

Aww, you beat me to it, Walt! I thought I was going to be brilliant by linking to that video, on this site. Oh well. Next time!

  • rachelleb

nice! how did you come across that? this is totally the guy & the last location is where i took the photo. he seems bitter, but not a “former” customer.. the part at the end made me laugh.. “edited on a mac with imovie”. i still argue that the battery is not “irreplaceable” if you can buy a new one.

  • jeannette

wow – what a find! that movie cracks me up. :)
