sean, i got an email from a reader that explains the clock in detail:

“The building above the numbers is 200 Water Street. I lived there for one and a half years as an NYU Film student, as 200 Water Street is currently a gigantic NYU dorm. Yes,
they’re everywhere.

The numbers are a calendar AND a clock, but it’s hard to tell much of the time, because many of the bulbs are blown, and it often doesn’t even work correctly. Here’s how it’s supposed to work:

The top row of numbers goes from 1 to 12. That’s the hour AND the month. The hour lights in white, the month in red.

The rest of the numbers go from 00 to 59. That’s the minutes AND the day The minute lights in white, the day lights in blue.

So, if you’re there at, lets say, November 5th, 2003 at 6:30pm, it should look like the following: The top row should be lit up with a red 11 and a white 6. The other numbers should be 05 in blue and 30 in white.”

The lit up numbers on the sign at water street are a clock. The current hour, minute, and seconds are all lit up in different colors. I’m guessing you were there sometime around five o’clock and that some of the bulbs are burnt out.

we need to go on a nosh walk before it gets WAY too cold to run around outside. this weekend was bordering on painful!

well…being the new york historian that i am, i believe the numbers count down the seconds and show the minutes of the hour in the time.

two other things, that photo of the three of you, so hot. and scratch…excellent movie.
