Today was the first day of openhousenewyork (OHNY), which kicked off architecture week in New York. 80 sites in all five boroughs that are normally closed to the public were opened up and we were allowed in for free. Everything from famous landmarks to subways to boardrooms to bedrooms to mansions to markets were on display.

I was still feeling kind of sick, but determined to take advantage of OHNY, I met Jeannette early in the morning at Washington Square Park where we were promised that we would be able to get a glimpse inside the arch. In reality, the arch is still under $3 million worth of renovations and we couldn’t even get close enough to touch it. Instead Ranger Bill gave us 30 minutes of history, most of which I already knew. But it was still helpful to see exactly where the oldest house on the block and the hanging tree and the potters field are. Informative, but not a great start to openhousenewyork.

i think bill should change his name to bob so he can be ranger bob. and isn’t he missing one of those national park service crests in his hat?

i didnt even notice that hole in his hat. .. jeannette noticed he had a boog. she wanted to pick it! he was very tall and gawky-ish with a loud voice.. like jim carey-ish.

Bill kind of looks like Jim Carey. Wonder if his last name is Smith… then he could be Ranger Smith, like on Yogi Bear.

Drat! I was hoping to get into the arch today. Went to the High Bridge water tower and little red lighthouse yesterday.

Duuuuuuude…I was so /there/ at the arch last week. My church (not the crazy lunitac people you mentioned recently) actually had a worship service in the freezing cold. Good times. :)

that’s cool. the arch is only a few blocks from my house so it wasn’t really a big deal to walk over there.. but to go inside.. i was really excited. plus jeannette had rushed in from DUMBO (Brooklyn).
