On Saturdays and Sundays, in a parking lot off 6th Avenue between 25th and 25th Streets is the Chelsea Flea Market. On Saturdays and Sundays, on the 6th Avenue sidewalk between 24th and 25th Streets are sketchy street guys trying to sell junk to the flea market crowd. Everything from computer parts to shoes.

The photos above are of the sketchy guys selling things on the street and not of the Chelsea Flea Market. Photos from the flea market here, here, here.

From a woman who barely spoke English at the flea market, I bought a 1954 edition of the Girl Scout Handbook for $2. It belonged to one Jane Marie Bedkowski of Girl Scout Troop No. 4, lead by Gloria Colny and Cecilia Miller of Bayonne, New Jersey. Research has revealed that the 1954 edition of the Girl Scout Handbook is going for between $6 and $8 online, so it’s a good investment I made. Also, worth the $2 just to see the sexist tips the Girl Scouts were teaching to young impressionable women of the day.

At another part of the flea market I browsed a cookbook that was published in 1912. It was so interesting. Recipes calling for pork grease and suet and such different cooking methods and times than we’re accustomed to now. I know I’m going to kick myself for pinching my pennies and not shelling out the $15 the vendor was asking for it. I could have browsed that book for an hour, I think.

I was in New York this weekend and learned quickly that shopping in NY is all about the street vendors and not the over priced trendy shops – well, at least for folks like me on a budget. Anyway, I cannot wait to get back to do more shopping.

    The flea market reads.
That there is very interesting treasures a person could come across.
I have come across the same situation as you did with the CookBook
    Second guessing your self
And whishing that I would have bought the article
But anyway sounds like you had fun

    The Hell’s Kitchen Flea Market

This past weekend was the last stand for the Chelsea Flea Market, which will became the Hell’s Kitchen Flea Market! Yes, you may or may not find bargains at 39th Street between 9th and 10th Avenues, in the shadow of the Port Authority, in the fumes of …

    Hi Rachel
Why did you include the Chelea Flea Market in your title?
Your photos did not feature ANY photos from the Annex Chelsea Flea Market, The Garage or the Grand Bazaar, which are the only Chelsea Flea Markets. The Annex has now moved to Hell’s Kitchen on 39th Street between 9th & 10th Avenue which if you were a true New York flea marketeer you would know.
Your shots were of people selling mostly stolen goods who are periodically arrested during the day.
The Annex Chelsea Flea Markets sell legitimate (normally vintage or antiques) merchandise, collected by permitted vendors who pay weekly rent on their space. There are many bargains to be found but it is not stolen goods. Looking at your pictures you are showing something false about the Flea Markets here in New York City.

    Rachael,
My name is Adriane Bedkowski, from Bayonne NJ. I think the girl scout book you found is my Aunts. She just passed away Dec5th, 2006. And she wasn’t my aunt she was like my mother. I acidentally found you by doing a search for her in google. I wanted to see her obituary, and I found this site. My auntJane Marie Bedkowski of Bayonne, NJ was born December 3rd 1940. We just celebrated her 66th birthday and 2 days later she past from a heart attack. My aunt was a very SPECIAL PERSON to me, and I know this is a long shot but I would love that book. Please name your price. I miss her soooooo much I would love a heirloom of hers like that. My dad was her brother and he passed last year of cancer at the age of 58, these 2 years have been so devisating to me. There are no more BEdkowski’s except me and my 2 sisters. So please email me or call me on my cell xxx-xxx-xxxx. Thank You so much!!!!
