Comedian & Punch Drunk Love

Last night I saw Comedian at the Sunshine Cinema on East Houston. Loved it. It’s a hilarious documentary that follows Jerry Seinfeld around as he tries out new material on audiences and tries to create a fresh new stand-up act. I was surprised at how nervous he got. A comedian as accomplished as Jerry Seinfeld, you’d think he’d prepare for 10 minutes and conquer audiences, but it isn’t so. He’s anxious. He’s unsure. He gets heckled. He sometimes tells jokes no one laughs at. I like how it shows the progression of the comedian’s career. Jerry gives advice to an up-and-comer, Orny Adams, and in another scene receives advice from Bill Cosby. It’s ironic how Orny wants to be rich and famous like Jerry and how Jerry is trying to go backwards and perfect a stand-up act, like Orny. It’s a great inside look the business. Oh, and half the movie, all of the scenes at the Comedy Cellar and Olive Tree Cafe (AJ’s cousin took us here when he was in town), are filmed in my neighborhood.

All I could say at the end of Punch Drunk Love was "hmmmmm". I can’t say I loved it. I can’t say I hated it. I mean, I think I liked it. It was weird for me. Adam Sandler is Adam Sandler, his voice is his voice. I kept expecting him to bust out and say "Price is wrong, bitch!" or "He called the shit poop!." But don’t go to this movie expecting there to be the usual Adam Sandler 6th grader jokes. It’s a dark comedy and I .. um.. I think I liked it.
