Update 09/24/02: I’m going to take back that explanation of “up north”. I believe it’s more of a state of mind. I just remembered a girl I knew who lived in Kaukauna and considered her parents’ cottage on The Chain of Lakes in Waupaca “up north”.
It is a complete state of mind. My parents have a cottage near Crandon WI and all of the pictures of me growing up (b-days, events, etc) are all from “up” there. I know people who consider Green Lake “up north.” Considering that they live in Chicago, I guess it is up there.
