Coming home from the Guggenheim this evening, I walked down into the subway and a middle-aged, respectfully dressed man stopped me. He asked if I had a quarter because he needed some money to buy a token. Visualizing my wallet in my head and knowing I only had a $10 bill in it, I said, “No, sorry, I don’t.” “I need anything, I just need to get home,” he said. And I said, “Sorry, I don’t have any change” and began to walk down the stairs. Instead of asking the next person if they could help him out, the man began to scream at me about how I wouldn’t give him any money because he was black and that some day I was going to be sorry because someday I would need the help of a black man. His words made my blood boil! At the bottom of the steps I turned around and yelled back, “It’s NOT because you’re black!” But he just kept yelling, “Some day you’re going to need a black man’s help!” Just because I have fair colored hair and skin, I’m automatically racist? If he only knew…. grrr!
